About SATCD

Who we are

A locally rooted, community-based organisation in Samburu County, Northern Kenya — one of the most climate-vulnerable and underserved regions in the country.

SATCD field work in Samburu County

Our story

Strategic Approaches Towards Community Development (SATCD) was established and legally registered in 2019 in response to the persistent cycle of drought, humanitarian crisis and structural poverty affecting pastoral and agro-pastoral communities. Our mandate is clear: to move communities from recurrent crisis response to anticipatory, resilient and self-sustaining development.

Unlike traditional project-based interventions, SATCD works as a community resilience systems actor, joining humanitarian response with long-term development through forecast-based programming, early warning systems and locally driven adaptation. Communities can then anticipate shocks and reduce their impact before they occur.

We believe sustainable change is only possible when communities are the designers and implementers of their own development. Our deeply participatory, locally led model makes sure community knowledge, priorities and lived realities shape everything we do.

By strengthening the connected systems that determine well-being — climate resilience, stable livelihoods, human development and local governance — we work on the root causes of poverty rather than its symptoms, so that vulnerable communities become active agents of resilience and transformation.
